Freddy's Golf Tips
Topic: Creating a Consistent Swing Arc

Tip: Keep your hands away from your right shoulder!

Players who struggle with consistency is partially due to path of the club head or the path of a player’s hands on the backswing or take away. The tendency in novice & intermediate players is the breaking (flexion) of the arms as the hands and club head get closer to the top of the swing (The position of the hands and/or club head end of the back swing and just before a player starts the down swing).

This breaking of the arms results in the player’s hands to be close to the right shoulder (left shoulder for lefties), as a result the player’s tendency is to cast the club at the beginning of the down swing or start the down swing with the hands or arms which are ineffective. Starting the down swing with either of these moves is results in loss of power, topping of the ball, skull shots or chunked shots.

One goal of the golf swing is to create a round swing arc with either your hands of the club head. Keeping your hands away from your shoulder will crate a circle-like swing arc thus increasing the percentage of quality shots.

Remember: keep your hands away from your back shoulder on your takeaway/back swing.

Practice: Try using your shadow as a guide on sunny days to give you immediate feedback on your hands position at the top of your swing. Set yourself up with sun at your back, keeping your eye on the spacing between the shoulder and your hands. If you happen to be swinging indoors, I recommend using a mirror to assess you’re the spacing between the back shoulder & the hands.
